What is Scoliosis?

Many people have mild cases of scoliosis and live with it without ever know they have it. It often gives the spine the appearance of a C or S shape, as if you are leaning to one side. Scoliosis can appear on either side of the spine. Several signs can help you determine if you are showing signs of the condition, such as:

  • Uneven shoulders
  • The head is not centered above the pelvis
  • The hips are uneven and may be raised high on one side
  • The rib cage is not even on both sides
  • The waist is uneven
  • The body leans more to one side
  • Persistent back pain
  • Reduced pulmonary function

The cause of scoliosis is not known. Some people are born with it, and others develop it as they age. Some possible causes may include:

  • Problems with the nervous system, including cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy
  • It may be inherited or genetic, as it tends to run in families
  • Legs are not the same length
  • Injury to the spine or back
  • Infections
  • Tumors
