Tension Headache

Over the years, people have become skilled at identifying certain common types of pain and the best way to address particular issues. Headache and migraine treatments can be tough to find because treatment requires knowing the specific cause of the pain, which could be one of many. The common reasons why someone has a headache or migraine are stress, injury, or genetics. Because of this, people often disregard seeing a chiropractor as an option over pain medication. At North Park Chiropractic, we have provided residents of Havre De Grace, MD, and Bel Air, MD, with tension headache treatment for many years.

What Causes Headaches?

Only about 5 percent of headaches are a warning signal of major medical issues. The remainder is generally tension headaches, migraines, or cluster headaches. The most common specific cause of headaches is associated with muscle tension in the neck. Modern times have left people spending more time in a fixed position (at a desk staring at a computer, drivers looking forward out of a window) for several hours of the day. This increases joint and muscle irritation between the upper back and the scalp, causing the head to ache.

What Can Be Done?

Staying hydrated helps prevent headaches associated with dehydration as well as keeps the muscles and joints more functional. Taking periodic breaks to do neck rotations and stretching exercises also helps keep muscles from being over-tense in one position for too long. Being mindful of teeth clenching reduces jaw flexing, which helps to reduce tension headaches.

After a headache has formed, it is still good to drink water for hydration. Being hydrated helps increase headache and migraine treatment response time to medicinal treatments, such as aspirin, by helping distribute it through digestion. For tension headaches, motion exercises and massages of the neck can help relieve pain.

What Can a Chiropractor Do?

As chiropractors are focused on joint and muscle connections, they are trained to work the parts of the body related to the common sources of pain. From a preventative measure, a chiropractor can help coach proper posture for sitting or standing positions, offer exercises and relaxation skills, and even offer advice on nutrition intake that helps with a variety of aches and pains.

Spinal manipulations and adjustments can be performed to realign the vertebrae, improving their function as well as alleviating the stresses put on the system from being misaligned. Though this is great in headache and migraine treatment, regular adjustments can also be great for preventing the pain.
